CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. The cannabis plant contains more than 100 types of cannabinoids. The most popular cannabinoid that people have typically heard of is THC. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is the major active ingredient found in marijuana that causes people to experience a “high feeling”. Although the legality around the use of cannabis is quickly changing, it is still illegal in most places because it is derived from the marijuana plant.
Most CBD oils, however, are derived from industrial hemp. Hemp carries almost no THC (below 0.3%) and has high concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is not psychoactive and is a naturally occurring substance that’s used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm.
CBD interacts with our bodies in a variety of ways. One of the main ways is by mimicking and augmenting the effects of the compounds in our bodies called “endogenous cannabinoids” – so named because of their similarity to compounds found in the cannabis plant. These “endocannabinoids” are part of what scientists refer to as the “endocannabinoid system.”
The discovery of the endocannabinoid system has significantly advanced our understanding of health and disease. It has major implications for nearly every area of medical science and helps to explain how and why CBD is such a versatile compound.
